ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

The city of Sao Paolo, Brazil was founded on this day in 1554.

In 1858, The Wedding March by Felix Mendelsohn was played at the marriage of Queen Victoria’s daughter to Friedrich of Prussia becoming the standard wedding recessional for many generations.

In 1890, Nellie Bly completed her round-the-world journey in 72 days.

In 1909, Richard Strauss’s opera, Elektra, received its debut performance at the Dresden State Opera.

In 1915, Alexander Graham Bell made the first transcontinental telephone call, from New York to San Francisco.

In 1937, The Guiding Light debuted on NBC radio in Chicago. The show moved to CBS television in 1952, where it remained on the air until Sept. 2009.

In 1947, Thomas Goldsmith, Jr. filed a patent for a Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device, the first-ever electronic game.

In 1949 the first Emmy Awards were presented at the Hollywood Athletic Club.

And on this day in 1998, Victoria Adams, aka Posh Spice, was engaged to soccer player David Beckham.
