The Secret City in the Forest

Catskill Made is a great online magazine about arts and artists of the Catskills. I responded to their call for submissions for their summer issue and was asked to write a piece about what it’s like to make The Secret City in my new hometown of Woodstock. The magazine has a different theme for each issue and the theme for this summer’s edition is TRIBES. This is a sweet coincidence as last summer, for our inaugural Woodstock service, our theme was TRIBES. Cool, right?  Enjoy the article – and check out the whole issue, it’s a great magazine and the other pieces are really wonderful, esp from the POV of someone who makes a communal work of art. As we say at The Secret City: We’re Connected. Oh, and btw – our Woodstock event this summer will be Sunday, August 2nd at The Byrdcliffe Theater, the theme will be CAMP. JOIN US!

Byrdcliffe Theater

So, we had our first gathering in Woodstock, New York yesterday and it was wonderful! To be in the old Byrdcliffe Theater here in the Catskills on a beautiful summer day with friends from the area – and lots of great friends from the city who drove up for the day. The choir was wonderful – great band, the D’Amby Project, who danced for us. Holly Shelowitz provided fresh summer peaches – but, you know, I’m gonna let you read all about in this fabulous piece from Hudson Valley Good Stuff – they came yesterday and wrote a great piece about the service. Here’s to an auspicious beginning to our expansion into the Hudson Valley. Thanks to all who came and took part. We’re gonna take the month off now to recuperate and plan the next season. Excited for the rest and to see you all somewhere soon.

Julie Novak | Featured Artist

I’m thrilled to have Julie Novak taking part in our event this Sunday in Woodstock. Julie’s an amazing, dynamic performer and community leader whom I had the pleasure of seeing perform a couple months ago as part of TMI project – a great non-profit in the Hudson Valley. Here’s Julie’s bio:

JULIE NOVAK has been performing in around the New York Tri-State area for the last 15 years. Her comedy combines a keen look at the politics of queerness, gender variance, and everything in between.

She studied comedy and improv at Second City in Chicago and has performed stand-up in Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington DC. She recently participated, along with such comedians as Lewis Black and Kathy Griffin, in the Serious Laughs Comedy Festival in Kingston, NY and headlined Queerstock, a Woodstock, NY gay and lesbian cabaret. Past roles have included Handler in “Talking With,” The Woman Who loved to make Vaginas Happy in “The Vagina Monologues,” Shirley Markowitz in “The Producers,” and Moss in an all-female version of Glengarry Glen Ross.

Julie is also the co-founder of tmiproject, a non-profit organization offering transformative memoir workshops and performances that empower people to examine and move beyond their limiting stories, unlocking their full, magnificent potential.

Woodstock, Here We Come!

The Secret City is expanding to a new town, and boy, is it a goodie! We will be gathering in Woodstock, NY, that haven of love, art and music up in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. I’m so excited to share our work with the amazing community and to share the work of a lot of great local artists and performers. The theme for the event is TRIBES – and, it will be taking place at the historic BYRCLIFFE THEATER – a beautiful, charming old barn-style theater which is part of the Byrdcliffe Artists Colony – the original artist colony of Woodstock. Bobby and I moved here to Byrdcliffe in October and live just down the road from the theater. So, it’s a perfect fit – and really exciting to think that The Secret City expanding in this way at this time. Kismet! So, please tell your friends, and if you’re in the area, please join us for our debut in the Hudson Valley – we’re gonna Raise The Roof!!

Who better to represent MUSIC for our first event in Woodstock than the one and only Simi Stone? Local singer/songwriter, world traveler, beloved sideman for everyone from Duke and the King to Natalie Merchant, is also a superstar in her own right – with a hot new record and a great sound described as “Mountains meet Motown.” I’m thrilled she’s going to sing with us with her friend and collaborator, David Barton.
